Thanon Khao San, Sydney CBD

the only thai restaurant in sydney with a tuk-tuk

Located in the lower end of pitt street (near the Thai quarter), lays the only Thai restaurant in Sydney with a tuk-tuk displayed at the front of its restaurant. After reading about this in the paper which was listed as one of sydney’s cheap eats in SMH some time ago, i figured it was time for a visit which soon led to a second visit with a bunch of 8 hungry eating companions on a friday night!

Thanon Khao San is a great place if your on budget or just want something yum without having to go through the whole heartache of lining up for hours or lengthy minutes just to get a fix. I’s a great place if your catching up with friends and just want something delicious with a casual dining experience!

Peek gai todd – fried chicken wings
Crispy flakey bits of crunchiness which coats these golden wings

tod man pla – fish cake
good ole fish cakes! god I love you when i’m about to indulge in thai food!

som tum thai – hot thai papaya salad
Extremely hot which is bound to burn that it even burned my fire-proof mouth! Absolutely delicious and scored all the hot notes which I find is hard to get these days as restaurants tend to ease off the chili! CHILI LOVERS, THIS ONE IS FOR YOU!

Kao pad sub pa rod – pineapple seafood rice
Years ago I had the worst pineapple seafood rice and I was tainted as to try this because of a bad experience at another restaurant. Thank god this pineapple rice was divine! Seafood was embedded throughout the dish with bits of sweet pineapple! I find not many thai restaurants in Sydney serve this up so i think this is something to order if your up for something exotic and something different.

kho moo yang – marinated bbq pork
If its one thing I love, its BBQ pork! Thai seem to make this different to the chinese and so forth so if your up for porky goodness, this is something you should try as it has a sweet glaze and is good piece of lean pork.

Kaeng leung yellow fish curry
The first time I came here i had yellow fish curry which was deliciously soft and tender which melted in the mouth. The second time i came here it done the exact same thing which indicated to me fish was cooked to perfect without it being dry and flaky. Winner with everyone on the table i know I’ll never look at chicken yellow curry the same way again.. fish curry here is yuM!

kaeng khiao wan kai – green chicken curry
Green chicken curry is something you just can’t go wrong with. I’ve had many green curries before and this seemed to remind me of all the other experiences i’ve had :)

Pad see eww
Can’t go wrong with flat rice noodle with tofu, egg, and soy sauce. Something about the sweetness of pad see eww and the work taste which seems to bea popular choice at most thai restaurants

beverages

The drinks here are served in huge bulbous glasses which is super cool. When you look around the room you’ll see people with flags and slices of fruit in their drinks!

thai iced coffee
everyone knows how much I’m in love with ca phe sua da (vietnamese iced coffee) so when is aw this on the menu i knew this was something I had to try thinking there could be similarities. I was wrong! Totally two different types of coffee which was a struggle for me to drink. Even though its not strong, the taste someone is some what strange almost like a burnt / woody like taste..

  1. I love going down Thai town and checking out these places. Especially because there are Thai sweets/snacks at the front of this shop too! Did you have Thai milk tea? Best tea drink ever!!!

  6. I went to Khao San just over a month ago after I’d seen some good reviews. Besides for the watermellon shake which was huge and delicious I thought the food was very average and the service pretty bad.

We might have had bad luck, but I won’t be going back!

These fancy restaurants look great but the food is often disappointing. When in a hurry, try Chon Siam on Campbell. Cheap eats and surprisingly good! :agree:
