Simon’s Heart of Korean Food

Korean food is one of those Asian foods where i’m completely clueless other than the usual ‘grilled meats and kim chi’. After speaking with Simon (The Heart of Food) and asking for advice on great Korean restaurants, his answers were “home cooked Korean is the best!”

Simon invited a couple of foodies (helen, ellie, betty j, steph, karen, lili, yas and richard) to his place for a Korean shindig . Lets just say we ate ourselves to the point where we felt like a nanny nap lol . Big thank-you to his family for preparing these lovely dishes and feeding out food driven belly’s!

Sweet & spicy crispy chicken (dak gang jeong)
We call it KFC! These were sweet crispy caramalised chicken wings! I could eat a kilo of this if no body was around. Talk about being addictive! All up I ate about 3 but deep down I wanted more!

Marinated Beef Ribs (Galbi)
The smell of charcoal beef was floating down Simon’s street that all I had to do was follow my senses to his front door! A huge favourite from all of us and a big favourite of Steph and Lilli.

Spicy marinated pork (daeji bulgogi)
I ate soo much chilli pork. My ultimate favourite because it was sitting and staring at me the whole time! This dish is was the bomb!!!!! Definitely my favouriteeeee.

Jeon – three types: fish (saengseon jeon), zucchini (hobak jeon) & sweet potato (goguma jeon)
I’m an egg eater! and a huge Egg and Rice kinda girl. This dish is like an battered with egg? yum!!! First time ive ever had egg like this with zucchini, sweet potato and fish! LOVEEEEEE LOVE LOVE!

Radish wrap (pal bo chae) - Royal court food crab, capsicum, egg, cucumber, king oyster mushroom. Served with a mustard/mayo/vinegar dipping sauce.
I can imagine myself eating these all day rather than going out on my lunch break in search of vietnamese rice paper rolls. I love the way the knots are tied. Its such a beautiful elegant tasty dish!

Jelly fish salad (hae pa li neng chae)
When everyone asked what this dish was and simon says “JELLY FISH” My eyes lit up as i loveeeee jelly fish! Strange I know but i love the texture and the taste as i always think im eating super thin noodles.

Seasoned mung bean sprouts (sukju namul michin)
Great vegetable dish that goes well with the beef and pork. Beansprouts absorb all the juices holding the seasoning of this dish. When there’s meat I’ve gotta have some greens!

Chinese cabbage kimchee (baechu kimchee)
Home made kimchee! doesnt get fresher than this! I love kimchee especially for its hotness. Its just one of those korean dishes I have to have if im eating korean!

Desert

I’m such a dumb head I bought cakes and tarts from Brasserie Bread and I was soo knocked out on flu tablets it completely slipped my mind. It was somewhere in the kitchen.

Pannacotta  Yas (made by Yas)
Wondering if this was one of Yas’ late night creations. Little spillage accident happened but we managed to save the Pannacottas! Absolutely delicious!!! I want moreeeee!

Chocolate Bacon Cupcakes
HELEN made these awesome cupcakes! Cake was beautiful mixture between salty and sweet. Kind of like the Popcorn Macaron by Adrian Zumbo, Sweet but salty! I ate a total of 2 of these *gobble gobble gone!*

Rice Cake (ddeok)
Similar to a japanese mochi only not soft and jiggly. Very interesting dessert. Unsure of what was in the center but it was a dry peanut like paste.

Caramalised Sweet Potato with palm sugar (Ellie)
When we first poured these on a plate, I thought wow these golden munchies look amazing / unique. Very interesting dish  almost could pass as a savoury.  Crunchy with a sweet candy like glaze.

Lili’s delicious creation
Mango with golden crunchy oats. Filled with flavour I loved the buttery taste and the texture.

Sweetness Marshmallows
I’ve never had marshmallows as soft, fluffy, spongey, like this. The thought of seeing vanilla bean extracts throughout the vanilla flavoured  marshmallow is one of a kind. Came in a variety of flavours e.g. passionfruit! yuM

Perfect way to wash down all this eating..

    Such wonderful coverage!

Thanks for making it a fun time. Though your cakes/tarts were overlooked from a sharing perspective, they were certainly not overlooked afterwards! A blessing in disguise, at least for me :) hehe

Can’t wait to see what you put on for your party. Count me in!
