Mumbai Nights, Neutral Bay

Food Morning have a coupon deal for curry lovers! (2 side dishes + 2 pappadums + ANY 3 Tapas + ANY 2 Mains + 2 Desserts + 2 Coffee or Tea!)

Although what I ate wasn’t entirely as the coupon requires, it’s an eye opener for meal choices. If your like me whose jumped on the ‘coupon bandwagon’ , I strongly believe coupons are the way to save money and a genius way to sample various dishes at a restaurant which may or may not be in your comfort zone. Mumbai Nights was definitely out of my comfort-zone (in terms of location) as I hate driving across the god damn bridge but, having said this, I’m a huge lover of Indian food and would cross bridges for Indian food any day!

Mumbai Nights is a local family owned business which focuses on home style Indian cuisine without the sugar coated ‘fancy fusion Indian cuisine which sometimes lacks the component of authentic Indian food! On arrival, I was introduced to the very friendly Zinny (owner), who works her magic around the restaurant greeting and getting to know her customers. Her presence, smiles and friendly down to earth personality and passion for food, is what makes the locals feel comfortable and return for more. Mumbai Nights seems to be known well with the locals as many take-away requests are put through, while others simply enjoy a casual dining experience with friends and family.

2 x Pappadums with additional condiments
Pappadams are the Indian version of mexican corn chips

Pappadum condiments – sweet mango chutney & cucumber yoghurt raita
First time i’ve ever heard of dipping pappadums into condiments. Pappadams and sweet mango chutney go well together and the cucumber raita yoghurt dipping sauce was quite addictive.

Indian tapas

Crispy potato bajji (vegetarian)
Zinny recommend I try this dish as it seems to be a popular one for locals which turned out to be my favourite for the night!!! The inside is soft mouth watering potato with mustard seeds which reminds me of the potato filling of a Marsala dosa. The outside golden shell consists of a thin crispy batter and complimented with coconut dipping sauce.

Seekh kebab
Another recommendation was to try the seekh kebab which is popular with the locals. When eaten, it was quite ordinary but once they gave us a tamarind sauce, it really complemented the dish.

tandoori lamb cutlets
The coupon says “lamb not included”, zinny also requested I try this, as it is another popular dish which fly’s with the locals.

Mains

Good thing about Mumbai Nights curries, is that they cater for levels of heat (not hot, medium, mild, extra hot).

Lamb korma
I’ve had many lamb kormas and I found this curry not as heavy as some could be which i liked with the tender lamb which melted in your mouth. Definitely my favourite curry for the night.

beef rogan josh
Its been a while since I last had rogan josh and quite frankly it was something I needed to trigger my memory. Tomato gravy had a tang to it with the additional spices.

Basmati rice
I’ve gotta have my rice when im downing curry!

Peshwari naan bread
My favourite naan!! I love how the sultanas with the coconut are packed inside the naan. Its soo good when you eat the curries with this type of naan as it creates a whole new taste when combined with the curry. The sweetness of the sultanas and the coconut changes the taste of all dishes.

Garlic Naan ya’ll!

dessert

warm gulab jamun
this is my most feared dessert. Growing up in fiji, I used to be traumatised by this Indian dessert. I’ve always thought of it as being too sweet but this was the most edible one by far. No doubt it was sweet, but not super super sweet that I’ve given myself a sugar coma and the possibility of diabetes.

mango kulfi
ive tried numerous amounts of kulfis and if you love mango lassi, this tastes exactly like a lassi. Its a dessert you can’t get wrong.

  5. Love Indian desserts – I also have a pretty hardcore obsession with pappadums haha. Love those deals and yeah sometimes they are a little misleading so I have to check the fine print. Good for trying new things though :)
