Madame Brussels, Melbourne

magical world meets, men in retro tighty whitey shorts..
funk-ay brollies and rum in the sun!

Madame who? In the 1800′s, Madame Brussels opened her first brothel (at the age of 28) on Lonsdale Street in Melbourne. She later owned an controlled a total of eight ‘high class’ brothels in the precinct.

A while ago when I was down in Melbourne for work (and shopping of course), I teed up with Food Rehab for some food (as foodies do). Madam Brussels isn’t an obvious place to find so if your not a melbournian, you wouldn’t notice Madame Brussels existence (trust me, I’ve walked down bourke st dozens of times). At first glance the entry isn’t much, but once you reach the roof top you’ll be gobsmacked at the sight of entering this magical world!

The waiters (dudes) are dressed in retro tighty whitey Wimbledon type tennis shorts with the flare of trendy metro style fashion. (I wish I took a photo, but I didn’t want to be seen as a perv LOL)

Russian Prussian with rum!
It was 11:30am and we were already on the spirits whoa! Everyone knows when you drink in the sun sometimes you could get a bit tipsy.

Poached chicken & chives with tabasco, pickles and lemon
Lightly toasted sangaz (sandwiches) accompanied with delicious pickles (god i love pickles). Perfect for a hot sunny day with the extra tabasco sauce to make your mouth tingly.

Chicken liver parfait
I heart silky pate! For those who aren’t that great with chicken liver, this wasn’t as livery as it can sometimes be (I love pate of all kinds so i’m lovin’ it left right and center). This was served with toasted brioche like bread with a side of cauliflower and onion condiment.

dessert

Because we’re piggies we decided to be scabs and order more than what we could chew on LOL.

Lemon sponge cupcakes with hot pink butter icing
I would say its a must to get these cupcakes only because it adds to the whole magical experience of dining here. I love it how its got a spoon stabbed into it (talk about funk-ay!) Cupcake may not be the best cupcake ever but hey you’ve just gotta get it!

Do you fondue?
I dunno if it was the sun that was drying my mouth but boy it twas a struggle to eat / we were super full.

If your here for drinks, i’d recommend holding up one of those awesome brollies so you could look fully pimped out. If your eating in, i imagine it would be quite difficult to hold a brolly and pick up a sanga at the same time so i’d suggest book a table under a brolly so you won’t have to roast in the hot humid sun.

I love this place! I’ve been here twice now, but mostly for the cocktails, haven’t tried many of their dishes. Will have to next time I’m in Melbourne town!
