kobe jones – 12 course degustation

(T) found an awesome coupon deal for $69 for a 12 course degustation that would normally cost $149! In celebration for (Mkys) birthday, we headed out to Kobe Jones for japanese fushion styled degustation which left us feeling quite full.

If you’ve never heard of Kobe Jones, its an up-market japanese restaurant with a friendly teppanyaki bar that doesn’t throw egg at your face. Instead its very civilised yet entertaining watching them cook up a feast before your eyes. Unfortunately this review isn’t based on their teppanyaki but a sample menu which consisted of 12 dishes. I must warn you, if your not that great with eating raw fish (king fish, tuna, mackrel, scallops, scamp, prawns etc) then you may want to twice about the pros and cons of things you may be able to eat.

They sell sushi and all sorts of delicious goodies like fried chicken and tempura, but you will find yourself thinking this is food which could easily be ordered at a good quality sushi bar. So if your going to come here, I suggest you give everything a try and be open minded because you could find yourself with mixed reviews e.g. really hating it, finding it mediocre, or totally loving it.

wagyu tenderloin tataki

Served with raw onion, this is a simple beef dish which is semi raw and cold. Dishes like this is something I’ve naturally been scared of. I’ll eat it but I’ll have to wash it down with a drink as the taste of blood makes me feel a bit queezy.

number one special

they call this NUMBER 1 for a reason because this was probably my ultimate favourite dish of the night! inside is jam packed with Alaskan crab salad which was absolutely delicious!

Scallop sashimi carpaccio

When I have japanese / sushi train I have to have my raw SCALLOP!!! Its my favourite especially with its garnished with mouth watering flavours.

hawaiian roll

simple normal fresh sushi with prawns, tuna, avocado and poke sauce! One of those dishes you can’t go wrong with.

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/kobe_jones_hawaiian_roll.jpg

Seafood poke

Delicious sashimi cubes which was marinated beautiful. I’d love to eat with with a bowl of rice as it would be quite comforting especially with the generous portion of seaweed!

anago scallops

Sushi stuffed with delicate tender scallops and Alaskan crab salad. The outside is lightly batterd with tempura which added a nice crisp texture.

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/kobe_jones_ango_scallops.jpg

sashimi salad

I would have loved to taste the ponzu dressing. It tasted more like a mouth full of leaves. The Alaskan crab salad made another appearance with seaweed and more sashimi slices which was scattered around the top.

Volcano roll

Deliciously UGLY!!! I’ve never had a volcano roll which looked quite messy. Having said this it was deliciously creamy and another sushi which you can’t go wrong with!

Alaskan crab

Sweet crab with soft juicy tender flesh.. how could you not love this??

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/kobe_jones_alaskan_crab.jpg

Chicken karaage

japanese KFC! haha Crunchy chicken batter with tender boneless chicken! Non seafood lovers, this one is for you!

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/kobe_jones_chicken_karaage.jpg

Wagyu hot rock

DIY cook your own wagyu! I would have loved more beef on here it was so good when you add the salt and cracked pepper and even better when dipped into the ponzu sauce. The rock is extremely hot so try not to burn yourself. The waitresses shows you how to cook on it and if your really struggling with raw produce, slap some on here and cook it up!

Eggplant and sweet potato vegetable tempura

I’ve never been a huge fan of tempura which is why i never order it when I dine at a Japanese restaurant. If I’m going to eat something with batter or that is fried, I like my batter to be tasty like “BEER Battered fish & Chips” with some salt LOL. Having said this, this is great if your a vegetarian and or love tempura in general. It’s faultless! <3

Ama Ozen – Dessert sampler with signature chocoalte chopsticks

Ending the dinner on a high note with this beautifully presented dessert platter, makes the night complete and satisfying. The line up of the desserts is brilliant and is bound to please many with its selection and variety.

  • sago and mango pudding
  • strawberry panacotta
  • strawberry trifle with Persian fairyfloss
  • strawberry vanilla cheesecake,
  • signature chocolate chopsticks
  • green tea ice cream with warm chocolate cake
  • flaming creme brulee
  • creamy macarons

 Wow, once again you make the food look soooo delicious with your photos! I’m a little wary about raw fish [I'm not a fish eater in general, although I like other kinds of seafood]. Your pictures make me feel a tad more adventurous!! :P

  9. There seems to be so many deals around, so are good but some are pretty mediocre and I would rather pay the regular price for better quality. But this deal looks pretty awesome for the quality.

Going to Pink salt tomorrow night on a $60 for 2 plus a bottle of wine – I’m going with very low expectations! :)

  10. Thanks for letting me know that most of the degustation is raw! I’m not so much a fan of raw food but slowly warming up to it. The dessert platter looks so so good!!!

It was dissappointing that Kobe Jones changed the Seantao menu without informing Spreets customers. We went the second time and bought identical delas being Sentao menu, onlt to find that the munu has been reduced not only in size of the dish, but the number of the dish as well.Salad sashimi no longer served, the Alascan crab was much smaller, and the Dessert was no longer sampler. We were given one kind only, pinnacota samll size.Very dissapponted.Spreets should warn participants to advise if deals have been changed from preivous offered. We wouldn’t have gone if we knew.

Omg that suxxxx. I’d feel really angry if I was in your situation :( especially when you should expect to get what you paid for on the coupon. Did you complain? Or complain to the restaurant? Sorry to hear you had a bad experience :(

Yes, we did complain to the restaurant and they said it was managment decision to reduce the number and size of the dishes as people complained that they were too much for them to eat at a one time. But the deal shouldn’t have been advertised as a repeat of the previous one.As far as Im concerned it was false advertising by the restaurant.

Beware ! Read the FINE PRINT on the SPREETS voucher : Minimum three people per booking. We went as a couple for our anniversary and was made to pay another $16 because this set menu is for 3 people or more. As it was just 2 people it cost more ! So all up we paid $154 plus another $55 in drinks. Not worth it at all !!! OMG we didn’t even get half of the stuff that is in this review !!! Feel so ripped off !!! Plus the food was terrible, if you like mushy food full of creamy sauce then go for it. The restaurant was so dark, we could not see what we were eating ( a good eating experience is being able to appreciate the look and taste of the food ), the techno music was so loud, we couldn’t hear each other. Shame there wasn’t a dance floor ! Can’t understand a word the staff was saying with their thick accent and they were all rushing around like chooks without heads on LOL. Our drinks list was taken away several times, for unknown reasons, so everytime we wanted another drink we have to ask for the list again. The cocktails / drink s are really expensive !

    Hey Sarah

Sorry to hear ur anniversary turned out to be a horrible dining experience :( – I cant believe the fine print says minimum of 3 ppl??? How strange… sounds like many will be set-up for that trap considering most ppl eat out for two while third person is considered being a third wheel *not fun at all*. =( how annoying!

I have a feeling the coupon we got must have been one from an earlier release? Not sure which coupon company friend bought it from but we used it for a group of 6. Its a big bummer that you ended up paying a lot more and importantly didn’t get to eat half the dishes. >_<

I did remember the cocktails being fairly pricy.. I almost ordered a mojito or a caprioska until i saw the price… which made me think twice so i stuck to wine. Table we got was also super dark, I don’t know how I managed to take photos of the food, I had to rely on the darn candle in the middle of the table.

Thanks for letting me know, I’ll know to read coupons more carefully as I have bought one DODGEY coupon for an Indian restaurant in bondi who never has its phone connected and is always on ‘voicemail message’. I can never seem to make a booking no matter what time of the day I call.. and it doesn’t say anything about bookings times on the coupon.. yet they tell me im only allowed to use it on monday or tuesday.. WTF… DODGEY!!!
