In the mood for thai
Are sydney siders thai-ed out?
thai restaurants are everywhere..
Its been ages since I last had thai food and to be honest, I don’t fancy it as much as I did a couple of years ago when the thai hype was around and everyone couldn’t get enough of pad thai and their aromatic curries. These days thai restaurants are everywhere that it makes me queasy when it comes to making a decision.
Shamefully, thai food has gone off my radar, I no longer think about having thai for dinner. I used to back in the day and it used to be one of the cuisines I wanted quite regularly, but these days… i’d much rather have something else. *shame on me*
After making a quick decision to eat anywhere on a busy friday night, “In the Mood for Thai” (opposite parramatta’s roxy), was a place we randomly decided to eat because we were all starving and wanted something fairly quick. Turns out In the Mood for Thai is owned by the same company as Thairific which is the upper-class / pricey version of thai (particularly famous in the eastern and northern suburbs).

Fish Cakes
I always start a thai dinner with fish cakes. Its their version of a big flat flavoursome fish ball *yum*. Most of my favourite thai places have their condiment made out of palm sugar and cucumber but at this joint, its sweet chili sauce :( Having said this, the fish cakes were still great!

Pla ob mor dien (Barramundi cooked in clay pot)
I love having some sort of fish / seafood dish when having thai. I usually order deep fried snapper but in this case, having it in a clay pot was something I have not had before. It was lightly battered with a sweet sauce with caramelised onion, green pepper corn, onions and lemongrass. It was my favourite of the night. Having said this, even though the batter did get a tad soggy from the sauce at the base of the clay pot, it made me feel as though it was a nice homely kind of dish.

Thai BBQ Chicken
We always order some sort of thai BBQ (beef/pork) and this time we went for chicken. Thinking it was going to come out thinly sliced, it came out looking like charcoal chicken with yummy marinades and flavours rubbed into it. Our first thoughts was “WTF how are we gonna finish it…” which in the end was a complete struggle.

Prawn Pad Thai
I really dislike pad thai’s that are way too sweet (super red) as it can sometimes get fairly sickly. This case it was the right balance. After not having pad thai in yonks it definitely brought back memories.

Beef Massamun Curry
Tender beef that pulls apart is what makes an awesome curry. Nothing is worse than having tough, head jerking beef. Massamun you beauty.

Kae num bouy – marinated lamb cutlets
I’m the only who isnt a fan of lamb. We were all shocked to see it only came in three tiny pieces we felt a bit ripped off considering it cost us $21.5 ($7.16 per cutlet). Us girls left it for the boys to clean up after all they gotta have their meat.

I get a Thai craving every now and then, which is how I like it. Thai food in Sydney is getting a little Thai-ed though, LOL.

Interesting… I order pretty much the same when we go Thai, but reading your story did make me think, haven’t been to thai for ages.

Mmm, that chicken looks great..!
I still haven’t gotten sick of Thai food yet, but I still haven’t had the chance to try In the Mood – there’s one in Surry Hills I’ve been meaning to go to forever… but so many nearby distractions…
