Flying Fish @ Sheraton, Denarau Fiji

Note: Lots of food photos in this entry, apologies if taking forever to load

Who would have thought Flying Fish had a restaurant in Fiji? I first noticed the logo at the Sheraton hotel I was staying at.. so I asked the staff if it was the same branch as the one in Australia and her reply was “Yes”. I had a sample of their beautiful snapper and coconut sambal at this years Taste of Sydney Festival (see entry) and I was instantly in love with their cuisine.

I haven’t been to the one in Sydney but now that I’ve experienced eating @ Flying Fish twice in Fiji… I’m impressed, addicted and more eager to try Flying Fish, Sydney. Stay tuned for future entry.. wont be long before i drive myself there and pig-out on their delicious food when i’m back from New Zealand.

If you tend on eating here while on vacation.. keep in mind it is fairly expensive and be prepared to pay for $145FJD per person.

AMBIANCE
at the Flying fish is fabulous. I wish there were beach front restaurants like this in Sydney. I think it is intelligently designed and the atmosphere is romantic, stunning and beautiful. As you dine at your table, under neath your feet is pure white sand.. so feel free to wear open closed shoes as it feels nice planting your feet on the silky ground.

SERVICE
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the waitresses were on par and polite as ever and we were well greeted and treated well when we came there the second time round. They remembered all of our previous orders and gave me recommendations when I was torn between two worlds of what I wanted and suggested meals that they thought were delicious. Big clap to the awesome staff and effort. Everything I tried was TOPS! Loved everything!

FOOD
Fiji is known for their fresh seafood and you definately cant go wrong with the fish portions here. I thought they were very generous and fish servings were huge which is what I admired. Seafood were extremely fresh and you cant get fresher than fiji seafood!

Starters

Seared white scallops with sweet corn puree, chorizo aioli and crisp potato
These scallops were huge! i seriously felt full after eating it. The chorizo was diving it was diced into cubes and fried till crispy as though it were crispy bacon

Flying Fish Seafood Tapas
I thoroughly enjoyed this dish. Kokonda is a traditional Fijian dish that islanders tend to make. The prawn popcorn was unusual and I enjoyed the fine popcorn texture.

Back-Left: Salmon with soy sauce, caviar and seaweed
Back-Right: Kokonda (raw walu fish cooked with lime, lemon and coconut milk)
Front-Left: Raw tuna with mint and watermelon
Front-Right: Prawn with popcorn

New Zealand Scampi and prawn dumplings with tomato and lime vinaigrette
The most expensive starter for the night, Fantastic portion and the scamp looks delicious with the light sauce broth.

Tina with pork crackle (cant remembe the exact name)
This dish was sooo good! Tuna was seared to perfection and the flavours were amazing. Local produce fruit (I dont even know what fruit it was it was a super sweet blood orange of some sort)

Salmon, Dill, Crusty bread and cream cheese
Apparently the salmon on this dish was amazing as it was ordered two nights in a row.

Sri Lankan king prawn curry with basmati rice, brinjal, pahie and condiments
I loved this curry so much i was considering getting it again on the second visit! But i didnt because i felt the need to try something else. I loveee this dish! BEST MAIN DURING MY HOLIDAY

Classic cooked 200grams locally caught fish (mahi-mahi, walu or snapper)
Mahi-Mahi fish with Hazel nut dusted on salt and vinegar mash and veronique sauce (Capers, peeled grapes, roasted hazelnuts, parsley and brown butter)

I’ve never ever had fish cooked like this before. The potatoes melted in your mouth and the grapes created a semi-sweet sauce. Very impressed

Wagyu beef sirloin with grilled king prawns, fondant potato, cafe de paris butter
I didnt try any of this but from their oppinion the beef was top stuff as it was tender and cooked to perfection. At first I thought those round things were scallops turns out to be potato!

Mediterranean style 200grams locally caught fish (mahi-mahi,walu or snapper)
Walu fish Eggplant chutney, shaved fennel and yoghurt sauce

Classic style cooked fish turned out to be the better one out of the fish dishes. Walu was cooked to perfect a sit was not over done! thats the most important when it comes to cooking fish :)

Desert

Warm self saucing chocolate pudding with malted ice-cream
I had a spoon of this chocolate pudding and it was to DIE FOR! it reminded me of a souffle.. soft fluffy top inside oozes with chocolate goo! Its every chocoholics dream!

Date & Vanilla tart with vanilla bean ice-cream
I admit i was scared about ordering this as a desert but the lady recommended it to me and boy was i overwhelmed which such a beautiful tart! Definitely the best date tart I have ever had! the biscuit base was soooo good you could almost taste the richness and the flakey crumble effect once broken with your spoon. The dates weren’t over powering which was great as they can sometimes be too sweet.. in this case it wasnt which was perfect. The top of the tart was the same consistency as a CREME BRULEE!! Boy was I a happy woman!!! Brilliant desert! Creme Brulee meets date tart!!!!!!! best of both worlds!

Salted peanut with caramel served with banana puree
Oh my god! this tasted like snickers!!! most unusual desert ive ever had and it was SOOO good i also wanted to re-order this desert! Its like having icream with lots of nuts (Nut lovers desert) garnished with sea salt crystals. Such a rewarding desert!

  2. It’s so weird that it’s the same Flying Fish as in Sydney! I’ve never been to either, but judging from your photos and experience there, it’s definitely worth a visit.

The food looks fabulous – you must have been so full after all of it! :D The peanut and caramel on the banana puree looks very interesting – at first I thought it was nougat. Definitely worth a try!

    Hi,

Cool blog. May I ask how much was the total cost of the meal above? was it anything like their Sydney restaurant prices? (FX taken into account vs. AUD)

I am sorting out my holiday budget and an indication would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks

    TQ1

    Hi,

From memory it was about $450-$500FJD.. thats about $250-300 AUD. The currency is even better now than it was this time last year. ^_^

You mention that its around $145 per person. Is this for a degustation or just 3 courses?
    Is it inclusive on wine?

Didnt have degustation… it was off their À la carte menu. Come to think of it, I cant remember if they had a degustation offer??

For my partner and I, bill came up to $290FJD ($145per person) which included wine.
