Chefs Gallery, Sydney
Chefs Gallery seems to be one of the most talked about places at the moment. Unfortunately, the hype gave me high expectations that I found this place to be quite disappointing. (Am I the only one who thought this place was mediocre?) In terms of flavour, some of the dishes were fairly bland for my taste buds which made me hunt for a dish that created an explosion in my mouth.
The lesson I learnt was, if your after soup or dumplings, your better off going to their sister?? restaurant Din Tai Fung. No doubt you’re stomachs will feel fairly satisfied despite your purse feeling a bit bruised. Having said this, I probably picked a bad day and that’s why I felt food had no love in it *aww sigh* After all, we’re only human and even I have shit days and I make mistakes.

Shou Zhua bing – Chinese roti with ham
Nothing beats mamak roti but Chefs gallery do it well making it fluffy similar to the real deal. Lighter and more pleasurable to eat than the traditional Chinese Shallot pancake (Cong You Bing). The pieces of ham made the dish feel very light and tasty which worked well with it especially considering this happened to be my first meal of the day being Sunday Brunch.

Chefs own golden snow flake chicken
With the dish name beginning with “chef’s own…” our first expectations was “this is gonna be one special crumbed bird on our plate”. This turned out to be fairly bland as all we could taste was the fresh oil seeping into our mouths as we took my first bite. awwwwee

Jian Bao Zi – Lightly pan fried pork buns
When we ordered these we thought these would be like New Shanghai or Shanghai Nights dumplings, where the broth oozes out once exploded. As much as it looks absolutely beautiful, as I split these open it was like a chinese pork bun missing the sweet red sauce and the oozing broth awww =(

Wok fried medium grain rice with three types of eggs (chicken egg, salted duck egg and century egg), a must try dish
Very fragrant dish which was absolutely delicious. While others thought it was a bit strong thanks to the century egg. I loved it!

Prawn and pork wonton soup
Probably the most disappointing dish of the day as the soup had no flavour whatsoever. Not only did the broth look fairly transparent, it tasted like hot boiling water =( The consistency of the noodles were beautiful though and would have loved it if the broth was more tasty so the noodles and wontons could absorb the flavours.

Zha Jiang Noodle – Handmade noodles with finely minced pork, dried bean curd and soya bean sauce.
My favourite dish of the day and by far the most flavoursome. Flavours were brilliant and the noodles were perfect as always. Definitely a dish you must get!

dessert
Steamed black sesame ‘piggy face’ bun
Without this dish, pigged-out wouldn’t be complete. One of the reasons why i came here was to eat these little beauties. They were way too cute to eat that eating it, made me feel quiet guilty LOL. It was absolutely delicious. GOD I LOVE BLACK SESAME!

Icecream selection – Blacksesame, green tea
The weekends have been fairly humid and what a way to celebrate it with asian ice-creams! Love it because they add the extra bits like fried potato, almond flakes glutinous balls and red bean!

Tea
Must have during Chinese meal, its to wash down the fat so we like to think

i’ve heard similar reports about the food. has the service improved? because i’ve heard this has been a sore point as well. i actually found Din Tai Fung pretty bland when i visited twice in the past so i reckon Chef’s Gallery must be really bland for my taste buds then. :-)

Service wasnt bad when I went.. I reckon Chef’s Gallery is heaps more bland than Din Tai Fung =|.. If I had to pick between the two sister stores, id rather go Din Tai Fung.

I don’t like Din Tai Fung and Chefs Gallery either. It’s bland. Very bland. The thing is, I think it’s the food in general that I don’t find appealing in any way. Is it just me or is this cuisine always so flavourless?

Hey Leona – I’ve also heard some mediocre reports – though the ice cream desserts look fab..!
(but I don’t think DTF is actually a sister restaurant. I think it’s just set up by the guy who started DTF in Aus)

i think the hype was about eating the cute dumplings? its something about having those little cuties on the table which made me want to go there too.
coool thanks for that. I had a lot of trouble googling the real story, someone told me they pulled apart form din tai fung due to internal arguments then i heard its their sister company zomg so many things.. dunno their dumplings are similar and so is everything else it sorta made sense they were linked some how.

I LOVE black sesame buns…. not enough places have them these days (maybe I just don’t get out enough!). Not sure if I would make my way to this restaurant just for black sesame buns though – I like my food with flavour!

Haha I immediately thought of you when I first saw those piggy buns! Pity the place sounds so disappointing, that soup does look incredibly bland. The chinese roti sounds interesting though! I just want to go for dessert!

At least there was Mr.Pig of the ‘piggy face’ bun family to bring some entertainment! hehe

I had the same experience with the snowflake chicken; it was a little bland and it was cold so nothing special. It was light though.

Ohh shame that you found it mediocre – it’s disappointing when you go somewhere due to the hype to leave a little less satisfied with your meal. I like my food punchy and full of flavour, might give it a miss, or just come for the desserts!

A very refreshing review on this place! I’ve been to a particular establishment that everyone else raves about but I was also seriously disappointed. My experience of the food was so poor you couldn’t pay me to go back. But yet everyone still raves and the place still gets awarded. I’ve been meaning to give it a second chance in case they or I was having an off night. As for this post – for my money, good to know, I’ll stick with the sister restaurant then.

I am in two minds whether I should visit or not.
I guess I should take a look for my self

no harm in trying it.
At least you could say you tried their signature piggy buns?
