About Pigged-Out

When did you start pigged-out?

After taking food photos 3 years prior to establishment of pigged-out in 2009, I loved taking photos of the beautiful food I was to consume. This eventually lead to the birth of pigged-out on the 4th of February 2009.

Why did you start it?

My family has always been a  big ‘foodie’ clan considering our cultural backgrounds are very diverse. I come from a family that is not your ‘typical’ traditional chinese i.e. where ‘chinese must marry chinese!‘. You’ll find my family consist of a mixed bag of nationalities (French, Filipino, Fijian, Indian, Irish, Polynesian, Portuguese) which explains how different I am when I compare myself to other Asian girls. Growing up, socialising and eating out became a passion which always brought people together and subconsciously, I would bring my digital camera to capture the food, memories and stories.

After some convincing to throw my photos on a web page, I admit when I started food blogging, I had no clue about the existence of other foodies and knew absolutely nothing about blogging in general. I had no idea what I was getting myself into and I always thought nobody would be reading my blog and this would be a pointless lifeless site (boy was i wrong).

What is your ethnic background?

Many people mistake me for different nationalities. Some think i’m Vietnamese, some say I look Filipino and others have no blardy idea. Asking me this question usually causes me grief because I’m mixed and people find it hard to comprehend the strange unusual twist of how my parents met which leads to a big long story. So sometimes to cut things short, I’m half Asian. My dad is 100% Chinese and my mom is Rotuman (islander) / European. When you mix an islander/European with an Asian chances are you make babies which look filo-ish thanks to my non pasty skin tone..

What is your favourite food and why?

My favourite food is French and Vietnamese. There’s something about the two which makes me go crazy. I love dining at French restaurants because as its always made me moan at how delicious the food is. French food has so much to offer and it brings out the best in foods which is sometimes best served when its minimally tampered with.

I love Vietnamese food because of its vibrant colours, its fresh flavours (herbs) that are combined together. I love it how the food is not as greasy as chinese and not heavy like thai curries can sometimes be. Vietnamese food bursts with flavour and I love how everything seems to work its magic together.

What is your favourite ingredient and why?

Eggs! It’s one of those ingredients which you could use at any day or time, you could eat it raw, fry it, scramble it, soufflé it or poach it. You could eat it with bread or rice (asian style) and if your broke or poor.. never fear eggs will save the day. Slap it on with crispy slices of spam or scramble it and mix it with instant migoreng and you’d be satisfied or if your hung over wedge it between two pieces of bread with bacon and you’ll be moaning over bacon and egg roll!

If your sick of savoury, eggs could be used to make a creme caramel, custard egg tarts or even mix-it up and make yourself a super dirty eggnog! I LOVE EGGS AND SO SHOULD YOU!

To be picky? or not to be picky?

As a child I used to be the pickiest girl EVER. There was lots of foods I hated and would sniff my meal when something looked unappealing. I hated certain vegetables, particular cuts of a chicken (thigh, neck), peeling prawns made me gag and eating meat close to a bone scared me. My dad would cook me a separate dish because he knew I would choose to starve over normal food him and my sister ate. Thank heavens growing up made my taste buds change. I’ve learned to love eggplant, lamb, octopus and many other foods.

Can’t say never.. if you haven’t even tried!

I often think why do people say they hate something when they haven’t even given it a chance?? Life is too short to be picky, the world is too big to be a ‘straighty 180′ that sometimes you just have to venture out and give it a go. If you really don’t like something, then at least you can say why and you won’t have to eat it again. There are some things that don’t tickle my fancy and no matter how hard I try. I thought I’d put a visual collage together to show you exactly what I’ve tried and why it can’t seem to grow on me.
