Astral Restaurant, Pyrmont

B first took me to Astral 5 years ago and i’ve always remembered their coconut souffle and the crispy skin snapper as bomb ass dishes which I still dream about till this day. It was time for another revisit and this time we came prepared with our eating entourage for a 4 course dinner.

[apologies for my horrible photos it was very dark in here]

Starters

Baby beets, pink grapefruit & Jannei goat’s curd
Very refreshing starter and perfect combination when combined with goats curd. Great way to start the night.

Smoked salmon with crème fraîche, cornichon & red onion
Dish came out in a huge long rectangular eye shaped bowl. Didn’t get to try any… B ate it soo quickly I hadnt even started my meal lol . His comments were “salmon lovers would love this!”.

Duck (will need to find the correct dish name)
Very strong gamey taste as duck is medium cooked. Very similar to eating duck pâté. Personally, I don’t think I could stomach all of this. J enjoyed it.

Poached Quail egg with, potato scallops and chicken
Dish was huge i felt full just eating this. I’ve never had poached quail eggs before but it was exactly as what I pictured in my mind. For your curiosity poached quail eggs were delicious lite in texture and not as creamy as chicken egg. Potato scallops melted in my mouth. Very appetising.

Entrée

Cannelloni of king prawn, black treacle beurre blanc
Oh my freaking god! This was soo blardy huge B had to half this with me. The cannelloni was al dente and the filling was packed with good quality produce you could taste the lovely natural flavours of prawn juice. To top it off, the explosions of caviar was like fireworks popping in my mouth.

Seared scallop, black pudding, English mustard crème
This seemed to be the favourite of the night as everyone around us ordered this. 2 King size scallops how could anyone say no to this..

Mushroom risotto, celery & truffled brie
M was in love with this risotto claiming it was the best risotto she has ever had. When the sight of truffles appeared on her plate boy was she excited. This risotto was gold.. i tasted it myself.. and its filled with lots of shroomy flavours! – Mushroom delight for mushroom lovers!

Green eggs & ham; 62 degree hen’s eggs, jamón Iberico de Bellota Grand Reserva, duck fat toast
J ordered this out of curiosity wondering what on earth is green eggs! Anyways it turned out to look like something that could be made at home with bits of green sprinkled on top of eggs. Apparently it was very niceee.. im not sure if it fitted well with the menu as it looked like something id eat for breakfast.

Mains

Crisp skinned snapper, parmesan gnocchi, pumpkin, garlic snails
I loved their crispy skinned snapper years ago and I still love it till this day. Although this dish has changed over time. The gnocchi was super cheesy… B had to help me down one of them as I was all cheesed out and already full LOL

Flinders Island lamb, Lancashire hot pot
Another favourite around the room. Waiters light the rosemary with the table candle as a part of presentation. I must say this is probably my favourite main out of all. Lamb was juicy, tender, flavoursome and boy there was a lot of lamb.

2 cuts of Angus beef: tenderloin & Wagyu striploin with Yorkshire pudding & smoked potato purée
J & B ordered this.. trust.. darn boys are so predictable. I had a slither of the beef and man it was really nice. Both thoroughly enjoyed, plate cleaned and licked so clean you could see your own reflection.

Desert

Apple & blackberry soufflé, bird’s custard ice cream
One word “M-O-A-N-A-B-L-E” Haunted by the soufflé I had years ago I knew I had to jot my memory again. This was another huge dish as it came out in the size of a mini pot (keep in mind it is super lite). The bottom had blackberry and apple. The custard icecream was delicious very creamy and very tasty.

Tate & Lyle treacle tart, sheep’s milk yoghurt sorbet
Amazing tart, soft gooey center this is perfect for any tart lovers. If i went back here again i would definitely order this.

Chocolate & hazelnut delice, raspberry sorbet & gold leaf
The waitress was raving on about how good this chocolate desert is. She recommended this and of course one of has had to choose it. You can never go wrong with chocolate deserts.

Orange & Chocolate, Dark Chocolate and Hazelnut Chocolate
Strange looking chocolates but so EFFING awesome… I wonder where I can get these from??? I wanted to eat all of it to myself! oh wait… i ate the most.. so technically i did eat most of it to myself lol
