Bills, Darlinghurst

Posted 16.05.10 // Author Leona //

I find it extremely hard to wake up on a Sunday morning. Unfortunately its the only day of the week I get to catch-up on sleep before another week of work *rolls eyes*. Some of us had shockingly never been to bills before so this was an important reason to wake up for some of Bill’s McLovin’ brunch followed by shopping with the girls and hoeing into boon chocolates!

I got there quite early (11am) and to my surprise there was a long line of people waiting for a feed and the occasional Japanese girls taking photos of each other in the doorway of the restaurant. Thinking they’d forgotten about us, we were finally seated an hour later which was totally worth the wait!

Rosehip & mint punch
The name of this beverage lured me into purchasing this. Betty & I found it fairly unusual as it reminded us of the Nerds candy (thanks to the light fizz and the semi-medicine like taste). Personally I didn’t mind this drink, took me a couple of sips to get used to but in the end the mint gave a nice refreshing taste.

Bills own ginger cordial
Lisa (Ginger beer queen) couldn’t resist the temptation of a ginger beverage. Taste was very gingery which I liked and some what reminded me of ginger tea but with the fizzy cold edge.

Bills hot chocolate made with callebaut
Steph couldn’t move away from her usual bills hot chocolate as this is one of her traditional must-haves when visiting bills.  Seriously, how could you say no to something that looks so dee-lish??? No doubt this is one of the most appealing hot chocolate beverages around.

Sunday, bloody sundayU2
A sunday without coffee is a sin! lol

Bill’s Special – It’s called ‘special’ for a reason..

Sweet corn fritters with roast tomato, spinach & bacon
I love you sweet corn! These corn fritters are made with REAL FRESH corn as I saw one of the chefs drag it into the kitchen! It is truly an awesome breakfast dish. The combination with the tomato, spinach and bacon hit all the right notes. Definitely one of my favourites!

Ricotta hotcakes, fresh banana & honeycomb buter
I’m not one who loves sweets for breakfast. I’m usually the type who orders vegetarian breakfasts . These pancakes are BOMB!! It wasn’t too sweet which is great for the morning as I don’t wanna leave feeling sick. GOd these are SOOOOOOOOO orgasmic! Pancakes were fluffy, soft light… the ultimate must have! Can’t wait to go back and have these babies againnnnn! *lick lips* =P

Scrambled organic eggs with sourdough toast
I’ve heard a couple people mention bills scrambled eggs is the best. I personally enjoyed his eggs as it wasn’t buttery, oily or sickly rich. Instead it was light, fluffy and smooth.

Parmesan crumbed free range chicken schnitzel with spicy slaw
Not your usual schnitzel which you would find at a general sandwich store. Chicken was delicious and the spicy slaw was really nice. Slaw reminded me of a fusion Vietnamese/Thai salad which really made this dish stand out.

After feeling completely full from breakfast, we walked up the road and bought chocolates from boon and demolish this outside the store LOL. We were all pretty excited that betty almost dropped the whole box onto the street floor LOL thanks to her super reflexes she managed to catch it in time *phewww*!!

The Tea Room, Gunners Barracks

Gunners Barracks? Where the hell is that??? After being some what scared of driving over the god damn bridge, I had no choice but to concur my fear and drive over the stoopid thing!! I can proudly say I didn't miss an exit LOL but I admit I was shitting bricks thinking I did. Gunners Barracks had been on our high tea list for a very very long time and it seemed to be one of the places hardly anyone had visited. After this date being in the diary for approximately 3 months.. the day everyone seemed to be free turned out to be a cloudy, cold, partially rainy / sunny...

Cafe Sopra, Waterloo

Posted 25.04.10 // Author Leona //

Before I continue, I’ve heard that Sopra are known to have some rules and one of them is “NO PHOTOGRAPHY“. While eating, my fingers couldn’t resist the itch of pulling out my dodgy compact digital camera =| (naughty girl I am).  Thank heaven’s I dined with a group that kept an eye out for me as I quickly snapped photos. Last thing I wanted to do is get told off during a casual Sunday brunch.

Tucked away in the abyss of Frantelli Fresh is Cafe Sopra. Sopra uses fresh organic prime produce to create simple tasty dishes. I only come here for brunch on a Sunday so try not to come around lunch time because you could be waiting awhile =| What I love about this place is the simple atmosphere with a warehouse style setting of various types of Italian pasta and a massive chalk board with the daily menu.

Rigatoni alla Bolognese
Its hard not to choose a pasta dish when you walk through Cafe Sopra. First time I came here my mouth watered at the sight of Rigatoni pasta! Sometimes when going to Italian restaurants, Italian pastas can be a hit or miss as I end up walking away thinking (man i could have made this better myself!). This was one pasta dish which looked small but boy it left me satisfied and seriously full that I pawned it off to the boys haha

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sopra_rigatoni.jpg

Orecchiette (little ear) pasta with prawns, lemon, garlic and chilli
My first time trying the orecchiette pasta which I thought was very different to the usual pasta’s everyone is used to. When saying this, the texture is smooth and much heavier (doughy). It was soo heavy i seriously couldn’t finish it and everyone ended picking at my left overs. Having said this, i really did enjoy it.. its the fresh produce they use.

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sopra_orecchiette.jpg

Fettuccine with lemon, chilli, parsley and pangrattato
(M) and I thought this one was fairly plain. I think it woulda been nice with prawn or bacon. Regardless of this, the pangrattato really gave this a lovely texture.. all those crunchy bits = GOLD!

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sopra_fettucini.jpg

Fishcake
When this first came out I laughed at (B) cos it looked soo small. But once he cranked the blardy thing open it looked like it was going to be filling and filling it was. Loved by (B) he said he’d order it again!

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sopra_fishcake.jpg

Battered silver dory with a fine tartare
Batter was extremely light. Its not one of those battered fish which is covered in a chunk of flour. Really good! I think it would have been nicer if it came with some sort of side salad. It looks a bit sad and lonely with just fried pieces of battered fish and a tub of tartare.

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sopra_silverdory.jpg

Porkbelly
(J) being the smart one, if I had seen this on the menu I probably would have ordered it. When his piece of pork came out boy did we all want a piece of that crackle and crackle we got. It was crunchy and fairly salty. The watercress added a nice fresh peppery flavour and adding a squeeze of lemon cuts through the richness of this dish.

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sopra_porkbelly.jpg

Osso buco in Bianco with gremolata
This pasta dish was bigger than the rest, it looked soo rich and flavoursome and my god the osso buco was really soft and tender that it melted once placed in your mouth. Definitely a pasta dish suitable for a cold winters day :P

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sopra_ossobuco.jpg

Pancakes with lemon curd and strawberries
My mum ordered this and she thoroughly enjoyed it. I didn’t get to try any but she was complementing the lemon curd so it must have been good for the zesty lemon lovers

Dessert

Banoffee Pie
A while ago I remember reading about Sopra’s amazing Banoffee pie which is a MUST if your going to Sopra for the first time.  The base is sooooo friggen tasty and buttery. The caramel, banana and cream is totally moan worthy. It’s such a dirty pie you could smear it anywhere and you’d be happy to lick it off HAHAHA!

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sopra_banoffeepie.jpg

Chocolate Souffle with vanilla bean ice-cream
I was torn between two worlds… I can never make up my mind between a rich, fluffy chocolate souffle and the banoffee pie. It was absolutely delicious. The chocolate was nice and rich and their ice cream is amazing. From memory their ice-cream is home made!

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sopra_soufflejpg.jpg

Sides

Breads
Complementary (I think?) Can’t remember if we paid for it. Crunchy bread rolls and grissini sticks with butter

http://pigged-out.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/sopra_bread.jpg

Hot Chips
Might I say, these are one of the best side of chips I’ve tasted. I’m supposed to be good…but I couldn’t resist ordering it. The chips was hot, fresh, not greasy and decorated with the right amount of sea salt. Need I say anymore…..
